{"id":1014,"date":"2018-06-07T15:39:57","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/?p=1014"},"modified":"2018-06-07T15:41:12","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:41:12","slug":"the-green-water-bottle-collective-sense-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/index.php\/2018\/06\/07\/the-green-water-bottle-collective-sense-making\/","title":{"rendered":"The Green Water Bottle: Collective Sense-Making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1015 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/508241_00_small-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/508241_00_small-300x300.png 300w, http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/508241_00_small-82x82.png 82w, http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/508241_00_small-200x200.png 200w, http:\/\/jhanderson.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/508241_00_small.png 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>At a client site yesterday I was introduced (by my wonderful co-facilitator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dawn-kinsey-ph-d-engr-spc4-8544644\/\">Dawn Kinsey<\/a>) to a group mindfulness exercise in collective sense-making, where the group spend a minute mindfully inspecting an object (in this case a green water bottle), and then each in turn offered a non-judgmental observation about the object using the phrase &#8220;yes, and&#8230;&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>Person 1: The bottle is green.<br \/>\nPerson 2: Yes, and the bottle has an orange cap.<br \/>\nPerson 3: Yes, and the bottle has a lightning bolt on it.<br \/>\nand on it went, several times around the groups of five, with more and more nuance and insight building.<\/p>\n<p>We then discussed the question, &#8220;What if this water bottle was a new user story? How might this collective sense-making exercise help the group to see the task more clearly?&#8221; Lots of ideas emerged:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collective sense-making <strong>reveals new information<\/strong> about the object being examined, things that I might not have noticed on my own<\/li>\n<li>Collective sense-making <strong>provides new ways of thinking<\/strong> about the object: language or terminology I would not have used but which deepens my understanding of it<\/li>\n<li>Collective sense-making ensures that <strong>everyone on the team has a<\/strong> <strong>voice<\/strong> and that each perspective is heard<\/li>\n<li>Collective sense-making <strong>reduces the tendency to &#8220;rush to judgment&#8221;<\/strong> that so often happens when something new and scary (or shiny) appears on the scene.
